If you are living a natural lifestyle you are careful about what you put in your body.
You avoid the three deadly venoms of the Black diet, and you eat clean whenever possible.
But what you may not think about are all the dangerous chemicals that you put on your body. You already know that dangerous chemicals are used to make soaps, hair products, and lotions.
Research has also found several toxic chemicals in your store-bought deodorant, too. These chemicals mess with your hormones, clog up your glands, and could even cause cancer.
The National Cancer Institute in the United States published an article titled Antiperspirants/Deodorants and Breast Cancer. Here is what they have to say:
Aluminum-based compounds are used as the active ingredient in antiperspirants. These compounds form a temporary “plug” within the sweat duct that stops the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface. Some research suggests that aluminum-containing underarm antiperspirants, which are applied frequently and left on the skin near the breast, may be absorbed by the skin and have estrogen-like (hormonal) effects.
Because estrogen can promote the growth of breast cancer cells, some scientists have suggested that the aluminum-based compounds in antiperspirants may contribute to the development of breast cancer.
In addition to aluminum, parabens are used to prevent fungi, bacteria, and yeast from growing on deodorant. Thats all good except for the fact that A 2017 University of California, Berkeley study suggests parabens might be more dangerous than previously thought–even in small amounts.
It’s true that parabens can be absorbed through the skin and once they are in your body, they can function as estrogen. As a result, parabens have been linked to reproductive, immunological, neurological and skin irritation problems
So if you are serious about detoxing from harsh chemicals – both inside and out – then swap your store bought antiperspirants for an all natural deodorant.
I made the switch myself. I tried several Black owned natural deodorant brands and here are the best ones I have found that smell good and stop me from sweating through my shirts.
Again, all of these are verified and 100% Black owned brands. Native Deodorant is not Black owned. The company was sold off to Procter and Gamble, so it did not make the list. Nubian Heritage is sold under Sundial Brands, but the owners – Nyema Tubman and Richelieu Dennis – both own and control the brand.
All of the deodorants below are 100% free of parabens. They have zero aluminum. No sulfates. And most have natural ingredients that you would recognize like aloe and shea.
The Best Smelling All Natural Deodorant
This was a hard one because what I think smells good might not be your thing. I love the Indian Hemp and Haitian scent because it is made with vetiver essential oil giving it an earthy, woody scent. Neem oil is also used in the deodorant. Neem oil comes from the seeds of the neem tree and are beneficial in a few ways:
- Neem oil is Antiviral – it inhibits the growth of viruses
- Neem oil is Antifungal – it inhibits the growth of fungi
- Neem oil is Antibacterial – it destroys the growth of bacteria
- Neem oil is Anti-inflammatory – it reduce certain signs of inflammation, swelling or tenderness
So not only does Nubian Heritage Deodorant smell good, it is good for your skin. Switch out your deodorant one time and you will be sold. Click the link below to get yours.
The Best All Natural Deodorant For Sensitive Skin
Olowo-n’djo Tchala is the creator of Alaffia. I want you to take a second to read his story here.
This man uses funds raised from this deodorant to create maternal care projects, fight sex trafficking, and build schools. He also builds cooperatives for instance, in 2012 he established the Coconut Cooperative, bringing 130 women into the cooperative family.
When it comes to the deodorant, the company uses reishi mushrooms for users with sensitive skin. Reishi is an anti-inflammatory, meaning it can reduce swelling, calm redness in the skin, reduce flakiness, decrease the chances of allergic reaction in people with sensitive skin, and protect the skin against daily damage.
This deodorant is an ideal match for sensitive and dry skin types that need extra TLC. Remember – All sales of Alaffia products contribute to empowerment projects to help break the cycle of poverty in Togo. So grab a two-pack using the link below.
The Best All Natural Deodorant For Kids
Every kid I know plays two sports. Cheerleading, dance, basketball, football – all that sweat will have your house smelling like a locker room.
While some adult deodorants can be too much for kids – especially before puberty – Chantel Powell created the perfect solution with Play Pits.
The deodorant uses all natural ingredients. Here is a short list:
- Shea Butter
- Fractionated Coconut Oil
- Kaolin Clay
- Candelilla Wax
- Babassu Oil
- apple cider vinegar
- and essential oils for fragrance
The only downside is that if you are an adult trying to use this product it will not stop you from sweating. But since young kids don’t sweat all that much, this is a great solution for them.
So What Is The Best All Natural Deodorant Overall?
The best Black owned natural deodorant is definitely Garners Garden deodorant. Here is why:
Price: Garners Garden is cheaper than most of the other brands up there.
Stops sweat: Unlike Play Pits above, Garners Garden works as an antiperspirant.
Non-Greasy Feel: Some people don’t like the ‘wet’ feel that the oils in Nubian Heritage create. I didnt feel that with Garners Garden since the deodorant is made using clays, powders, and baking sodas.
Best Reviews of all natural deodorant brands: By comparison, Garners Garden has more 5 star reviews than any other deodorant we tried.
The company has a huge line of other hygiene products too, so start with their deodorant and if you like what you get then try their other products too.
