How To Achieve Black Excellence In 2020 With Better Goal Setting

A movement is only as strong as the people that belong to it. In the Black Conscious community, we spend significant amounts of time focused on the weapons of white supremacy and superficial discussions on petty matters.

Lets be honest – the Annunaki might be interesting, but what can you do with that information? Chiming in on the Seti-Umar trash talking match is a favorite pastime of the community. But how does that help the condition of the people. How does that help you?

Its time for us to try something new.

If we are to build a movement capable of restoring Black men and women to their glory, we must focus on building ourselves up to our highest potential. This process starts with developing a life mission and continues with setting goals across the 5 elements of your life.

If you read the article titled How To Expand Black Consciousness By Understanding The 5  Elements Of Your Life, you will remember that those 5 Elements are:

  • Physical
  • Metaphysical (spiritual)
  • Career and Academic
  • Relationships (Social and Family)
  • and Resources

Black consciousness MUST mean more to you than debating, watching Youtube videos, and listening to talk radio shows. You must “do the knowledge” by applying what you have learned to each of the 5 Elements of life and set goals that help you manifest the knowledge that you have acquired.

Why You Should Only Set 5 Goals

Are you one of those people who set 12 goals and only take action on half of them? Even worse, do you find yourself setting the same goal every year? If thats you then your problem may not be the quality of the goals you set but the quantity.

The more targets you set for yourself the less likely you are to achieve your goals. Here is why: you have a limited amount of time and energy. We all do. Hitting just one of those targets is going to take more energy than you think. Hitting 5 targets will take almost everything you have. Trying to hit more than 5 targets is a setup for failure.

Some people are constantly busy, chasing one task after another but never feeling like they are getting ahead. They are constantly firing at multiple targets and burning themselves out in the process. At the end of the day, they end up burned out with little to show for their effort and still hadnt hit their goals. Dont be one of them!

But the secret to those people who are successful is that they set a limited number of goals and they focus all of their energy on those goals that will get them the closest to where they want to be with the least amount of effort.

This is your new path forward.

What Makes A Good Goal

Goal setting and achievement is actually a skill that you can cultivate. Like any other skill, accomplishing your goals can become a talent. And just like any other skill, there is a formula that you can follow to shorten your learning curve and improve your results as you get better. By using a “S.M.A.R.T.” formula to create high quality goals, you can improve your goal-achieving skill. Here is how the “S.M.A.R.T.” acronym breaks down:

S.M.A.R.T. goals should be as detailed as you can possibly imagine. Include weight, sizes, colors, areas, and feelings. For example, a weak goal would be “I want to get in shape”, whereas a specific, strong goal would be “I will be 190 pounds of rock hard muscle, with a 6 pack and a 6-and-a-half minute one mile run time”.

S.M.A.R.T. goals should be measurable. In the weak example given above, there is no way to measure “get in shape”, but if you are able to currently measure your weight at 240 pounds and your goal is to weigh 190 pounds, then it is easy for you to measure how far away from your goal you are.

S.M.A.R.T. goals should be motivating enough to pull you forward. This is the why, or the reason behind what your are trying to do. It is important that your goal be attractive, since you won’t always have the motivation to do something “just because”.

Attractive goals will help you stay focused and moving forward.

Attractive goals such as “I will achieve this so that my children won’t have to suffer as I did” or “so that I can be the example my family never had”. Attractive goals should begin with the statement “I will”, instead of “I want to” or “I am trying to”. Those two words “I will” are powerful psychological motivators that will give you energy beyond the limits of your mind and body.

S.M.A.R.T. goals should be realistic for you. Only you know what is within your reach and what is fantasy. What might be realistic for one person might not be realistic (or attractive) to you at this stage in your growth.

How do you know if your goals are realistic? Given similar circumstances, identify a person with a background similar to yours who has achieved what you want to achieve. If it is something that has not been achieved, identify the steps to achieving that goal, and find individuals who have achieved each of those steps.

S.M.A.R.T. goals should have time limits. Your goals will fill the amount of time that you give them. For example, have you ever procrastinated for two weeks on and task that ended up only taking two hours to finish? Having timed goals prevents that same procrastination from stealing your most valuable asset: time.

Putting It All Together

When we put it all together, here are the differences between weak and smart goals:

Weak Goals

“I want to own my own home”

Strong Goals

“By February of 20##, I will own a 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom, $300,000 red brick home with a yard, a basement, and a pool in Marietta, Georgia to have a stable place to raise my children and create generational wealth that will outlast me”

Weak Goals

“I want to lose weight and gain muscle.”

Strong Goals

“On April 15th, I will weigh 150 pounds with 2 percent body fat, because a healthy and attractive body will increase my self confidence and make me more successful in other areas of my life.”

Weak Goals

“My goal is to build a powerful network”

Strong Goals

“By November 23, 20##, I will add ten powerful local politicians, clergymen, and businessmen to my network to economically empower my community, because no human being deserves to live in poverty.”

Weak Goals

“I want to start my own business”

Strong Goals

“On August 1st, I will launch my barber shop on the corner of 5th and Market Street with 6 barbers, and a $30,000 investment because owning my own business is the only way to set myself free from working for others”

Using the formula above, get 5 sheets of paper. At the top of each piece of paper write one element of life. Then, on each piece of paper, write the words specific, measurable, attractive, realistic, and timed. Then fill in each space next to each word until you have a strong physical, metaphysical, career, academic, and relationship goals.

What you now have are 5 strong, clear targets that will help you manifest your life mission and focus your energy on those goals that will get you the closest to where you want to be with the least amount of effort.

Develop the skill of setting strong goals, take action on those goals, and become a better Black Woman or Man for your people!
