Each month, the Pan-African Alliance encourages our members to replace a product that they regularly use with a product made by a Black owned company. We call this the ‘Replace and Rebuild‘ initiative.
The Replace and Rebuild Initiative works for three reasons:
- Instead of supporting Black owned businesses with one – off purchases, you are providing them with repeat business each month.
- The money that you spend with Black businesses gives them the resources to hire other Black men, women, and children.
- You are more likely to get products that are natural. Mass manufacturing creates products filled with industrial chemicals, but Black owned companies typically avoid these toxins.
So each month we are asking all of you to pledge that you will support a Black owned business and replace just one item that you use regularly with a Black made product, and repeat this process until all of our household consumables come from Black businesses.
We all use laundry detergent each month, so replacing your store bought brand with one of the following Black owned laundry detergents is a great way to start.
Here are the two brands I have personally used and recommend.
Urban Hydration Lemon Coconut Oil Laundry Detergent
Urban Hydration was created by a Black power couple Psyche & Vontoba Terry. Psyche Terry is the Chief Inspiration Officer and her husband Vontoba Terry is the co-Founder of the brand with a strong background in finance and banking.
Their company has been around since 2009 and they also have an array of hair and skin care products that you should support too.
Not only are you supporting a Black owned company when you buy Urban Hydration products, you are also supporting people on the African Continent. According to their website, in 2018, Urban Hydration dedicated its first clean water drinking well to 300 Kenyan school children!
What Ingredients Are Inside Urban Hydration Laundry Detergent
You will be surprised to know that this is the only laundry detergent with Vitamin A used as one of its featured ingredients!
Other detergents leave residue behind that can irritate your skin. The skin is a retinoid-responsive organ, able to readily absorb vitamin A when applied topically.
And since Vitamin A moisturizes and stimulates production of new skin cells, you are getting the added benefit of having softer skin!
Where To Buy Urban Hydration Laundry Detergent
You can find Urban Hydration products on the shelves at major chain retailers like Target, Macy’s, and Sally Beauty Supply.
But the best way to buy their laundry detergent is directly from their website below. When you buy direct, you put a larger percentage of your purchase into their pockets and cut out the middleman.
And if you live overseas or stores nearby are sold out, the company offers shipping everywhere.

True Laundry Detergent
True Laundry Detergent is one of the most well known Black owned businesses online. The company was started by three brothers, Ali B. Muhammad, Malik Saleem and Abdur-Rahim Shaheed in November 2012.
The trio created their own formulas, formed the True Products LLC out of Atlanta, and control their own manufacturing and distribution unlike many other Black owned brands out there.
True Detergent is popular not only as a Black owned brand, but as one of the best natural detergents on the market.
In fact, True Detergent is vegan friendly and is never animal tested. Their product is biodegradable and free of the harmful ingredients found in some store bought brands.
True Detergent has zero animal byproducts (enzymes), phosphorus, caustics, formaldehyde, DEA, petrochemicals or SLS.
What Ingredients Are Inside True Laundry Detergent
First up, True Detergent contains surfactants. These are substances that make it easier for detergents to do their thing. Surfactants are great at removing oil and grime, which is why it is the main ingredient in True Detergent.
You will also see coconut amide in the list of ingredients. Coconut amide is extracted from coconut oil, and is used as a foaming agent to make the detergent foam up and better at cleaning.
Lastly, there are fabric whitening agents, fragrance, and color protectors in the detergent to keep your clothes bright and smelling fresh.
Where To Buy True Laundry Detergent
True Detergent is not on the shelves of most major chains, but you can buy it direct from the company.
The company also sells their detergent via Amazon below to make shipping more cost effective. If you want your product fast and without expensive shipping charges, Amazon is the best way to buy True Detergent.
Swap your regular detergent out for just one month and you will become a believer. Not only are you taking better care of your clothes, you are also supporting a Black business that needs your help!
