5 Smell-Good Soaps From Black Owned Businesses You Should Try [2021 Update]

Every month we review Black owned products for our Replace and Rebuild Initiative.

The idea is that each month you replace a store bought item that you use regularly with a product from a Black owned business.

One of the products we all use multiple times a day (I hope) is soap. But because store-bought brands are full of cancer causing chemicals like parabens, we are exposing ourselves to dangerous toxins that have a negative impact on our hormones, immune systems, and overall health. Not to mention that these soaps were not made with melanin in mind!

That means we all have good excuses to replace that cheap and toxic soap with all-natural brands from Black owned companies. Here are 5 that I have personally tried, along with where to buy them online.

Philip Garner – Founder of Garner’s Garden

About Garners Garden

Garner’s Garden is one of the most successful Black owned natural skin care companies out there. More than 90% of shoppers give Garner’s Garden a 5 star score, higher than any other company on this list.

How Does Garners Garden Soap Smell And Feel?

This soap is made with coconut oil, shea butter, and a fragrant oil blend that has a slightly sweet honey like smell. Almost good enough to eat!

Whenever I use store bought soaps my skin dries out as soon as I dry off. But since Garner’s Garden Honey Oatmeal soap is made with real colloidal oatmeal and olive oil, my skin felt brand new – even in the winter time. If you have eczema or dry skin, definitely give this a try!

Olowo-n’djo Tchala (shown far left) is the creator of Alaffia

About Alaffia

One of the things I like the most about Alaffia is the company uses its profits to tackle very serious social issues facing the African Diaspora. Their projects include

  • The Queen Alaffia line that empowers women who had previously fallen victim to the sex trade
  • Establishing a Maternal Care Project for Indigenous African Women, and
  • Building schools in Nadagou and Tamangue West Africa

The name of the company comes from a common greeting or valediction originating from central Togo, Benin, and Nigeria. Alaffia means a state of peace, health, and well-being.

How Does Alaffia African Black Soap Smell And Feel?

The scent reminds me of a smoky cocoa butter – chocolaty, nutty, slightly musky, and woodsy.

The soap is made from charcoal, shea butter, and oils, so it wont dry out your skin. The product we recommend is the liquid form of African Black Soap, so you dont have to worry about the jagged edges that dont dissolve away that you sometimes find with traditional black soap.

Abiola Ogunrinde Founder of Tropical Naturals and Dudu Osun Brand

About Dudu-Osun

According to their website, Tropical’s Natural emerged out of Mr. Abiola Ogunrinde quest to put Nigeria on the global map of products. Mr. Ogunrinde served as a senior executive at Eleganza and Lever Brothers Nigeria (now Unilever) in charge of quality control management before starting his entrepreneurial journey.

Today he is a member of the governing council of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), winner of the 2013 FATE Foundation Entrepreneur of the year, and a member of the Chemical Society of Nigeria’s Board of Trustees.

On top of all that, Abiola Ogunrinde has built over 15 churches, classrooms, libraries , healthcare facilities and supported the less-privileged in rural areas with basic social needs in form of food supplies , clothes and other basic social amenities.

How Does Dudu-Osun Soap Smell And Feel?

Dudu-Osun gets its scent profile from the ingredients used in the soap that include the following:

  • Pure honey
  • shea butter
  • osun (cam wood) palmkernel oil
  • cocoa pod ash
  • palm bunch ash
  • aloe Vera, and
  • lime juice

African black soap does not contain any artificial fragrance but its smell can be aptly described as being earthy. … This is because of the cocoa pods found in the African black soap. African black soap leaves your skin clear, soft and has a delicious smell.

4. Nubian Heritage Assorted Flavor Pack

5 Smell-Good Soaps From Black Owned Businesses You Should Try [2021 Update]Pin
Mama Mary, Nyema Tubman, and Richelieu Dennis all own Nubian Heritage

About Nubian Heritage

Yes, this company is Black Owned! The confusion comes from the fact that Nubian Heritage is sold under Sundial Brands. But the owners – Nyema Tubman and Richelieu Dennis – both own and control the brand. From their website:

Guided- by the legacy of ancient Nubia, the world’s first melting pot, we remix global healing traditions into modern wellness solutions. Ancient Nubia was once a center of cultural trade — a place where goods, ideas, and customs from across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean came together, influenced each other, and then spread across the ancient world. That’s the inspiration behind Nubian Heritage. We bring together traditional healing practices, cultural wisdom and indigenous ingredients, remix them and create modern natural solutions for skin and hair. This is our mission: to make cultural exchange the model for transforming the global community.

5. Urban Hydration Vanilla Body Wash

About Urban Hydration

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHdBwyOx5pY

How Does Urban Hydration Bodywash Smell And Feel?

This has been my everyday body wash for the past few weeks. African Black Soap can be a little harsh, and some of the other soaps on this list can have an overpowering scent. Urban Hydration Vanilla is the perfect balance of scent, lather, and skin nourishment for me.

Here is how one buyer put it:

Smoooth As Silk …… and sweet smelling too! I love how just a little bit goes a long way and how this purely sudsy soap rinses off well, leaving my skin feeling soft and not like its been “shrink wrapped.” The scent is mildly sweet and not heavy or perfumy.
