If you want to get the benefits of CBD oil without getting high, try adding CBD oil edibles to your diet.
And since CBD oil is plant based, it can be included as part of the plant based Melanin diet plan that we promote for members of the Conscious community.
I first came across the different ways that I could incorporate my CBD oil into my meals and drinks on Viceland’s show Bong Appetit (worth a watch even if you aren’t in the culture).
I was blown away at all the different ways the cast infused every course of the meal. And while I only take the THC-free, non psychoactive version of cannabis oils, the show made me a believer!

What Are CBD Edibles
You can call anything that you put in your mouth and swallow an edible. That includes foods, drinks, oils, and tinctures.
There is no limit to the list of foods and drinks that you can infuse with CBD oil.
- You can add CBD Oil honey sticks to your teas (you can find CBD honey sticks by clicking here)
- CBD oil smoothies
- Cannabis-infused butter (or “cannabutter”) – that includes peanut butter!
- Salad dressings and CBD infused olive oil
- and, of course, CBD infused baked goods like vegan brownies!
You can use CBD oil edibles as a main ingredient in a dish, as a seasoning, or as a cooking oil.
Assuming CBD oil edibles are legal in your jurisdiction, here are some benefits and ways to add it to your menu.
5 Benefits Of CBD Oil Edibles
CBD oil edibles have all the same benefits of CBD oil, with a few added bonuses:
1. CBD oil edibles have longer lasting effects
If you are using CBD oil for depression or anxiety, you want something that gets you all the way through your day. That is where edibles come in to play.
Compared to vaping, one of the benefits of CBD oil infused edibles are their longer lasting effects. It can take 1 to 3 hours for food to be absorbed into the bloodstream through the liver.
And once it hits your bloodstream, cannabidiol stays in your system by hiding in fat cells and releasing over time. This “time release” factor makes CBD infused edibles perfect for those who want long lasting relief.
2. Edibles are safer than prescription pain killers
If you are using prescription opioids or pain killers, using CBD oil edibles for pain are a much better solution!
First off, CBD oil is far less expensive than prescription medications. 60 10mg Oxycontin tablets can cost as much as $170, whereas a 600 mg CBD tincture costs less than $40.
Not to mention the fact that the World Health Organization has classified CBD oil as non addictive. You can check out their 27 page report here. Meanwhile, the rest of the world is suffering from a full blown opioid crisis! In fact, US opioid overdoses caused more than 42,000 deaths in 2016 (source).
So given that one substance is all natural, non addictive, and safe and the other is causing an overdose epidemic, which would you choose?
3. Edibles make it easier to take CBD oil
When I first started taking CBD, I just poured my dose into a teaspoon or used droppers. The problem for me was that CBD oils can have a grassy, bitter, or pungent taste. And anything that doesn’t taste good is harder for me to take every day.
But when I added CBD oil to herbaceous dishes and drinks, it enhanced the flavor of what I was already eating and gave me my dosage for the day.
4. Its easy to add CBD oil edibles to your everyday life
Another benefit of CBD oil Edibles is that they are easy to incorporate into your lifestyle. Whether you are vegan or omnivorous, and whether you take CBD oil for pain, anxiety, depression, or just good dieting, CBD gives you an alternative that fits your lifestyle.
For example, when my friends or co-workers see me popping pills, they assume something is wrong. That leads to potentially uncomfortable conversations (i.e. “Oh yeah. Just handling this depression and anxiety, you know.”)
But by using edibles, I can treat myself without drawing anxiety-triggering interrogations or side-eyes.
You can get your daily doses of CBD oil without anyone knowing that your salad dressing, tea, or work snacks are infused.
5. CBD oil edibles are fun to make and fun to eat!
I am a big snacker, and there are an infinite number of CBD oil infused snacks on the market.
Even if you cant find your favorite food with an infusion, you can have some fun by making your own CBD oil edibles. Its as easy as adding your dose to your batter, olive oil, herbal tea, or smoothie.
What To Look For Before You Buy CBD Edibles Online
If you want to try some edibles without making a mess in your kitchen, here are hundreds of companies selling CBD products online. But before you go shopping there are a few questions you should ask of any company you are buying from.
How Does The Company Extract CBD Oil From Its Plants?
There are 3 main ways a company can extract CBD oil from the plants:
- Using cheap (potentially toxic) solvents
- Using ethanol
- Using CO2
Some companies are able to sell super cheap CBD oil because they use propane, hexane, pentane and butane to extract the compound from plants. But these solvents can also be toxic
Other companies use organic ethanol – a grain alcohol that comes from corn – to extract oils. This process gets the most CBD out of the plant and is the safest for human consumption
To get the purest form of CBD oil, some companies use a “supercritical CO2 extraction.” The process works by using pressurized CO2 and low temperatures to extract the oil from the plant. While this is the ‘purest’ method of extraction, its also the most expensive.
So if you are buying CBD oil edibles online, make sure the company uses either ethanol or CO2 extraction methods. You will pay a little more, but you cant put a price on your health.
Where Do Their Hemp Plants Come From?
You want a company that uses hemp plants grown and processed in a safe environment. Since US and Canadian farmers are required to pass strict guildelines, their hemp plants are more likely to be up to standard.
Are Their Oils Full Spectrum or Whole Plant?
Whole plant means a company uses the entire hemp plant to make their oils and edibles. That means you get a full range of essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, protein, chlorophyll, terpenes, flavonoids, and fiber on top of your cannabinoids.
Companies that use full spectrum or whole plant CBD oil will place those descriptors on the label or on their websites, so check for those descriptors if you want to get the most out of your edibles.
