But first, understand why we say ‘real’ African history…
Real African history consists of conclusions about how Africans lived based on academically sound research that is – and this is important – free from racist bias.
When Europe extended its war on the Moors to include the whole of the African continent, colonizers viewed and wrote African history as they saw it. They discredited the achievements of whole empires. They called sophisticated languages and writing methodologies primitive. And they called African spirituality a pagan practice.
In an attempt to justify white supremacy, colonizers wrote about Africans through the lense of white supremacy. We cannot trust the conclusions they came to because of their bias. It would be like studying and practicing what you read in books on the role of men and women from the patriarchal 1930s.
So when we create lists of books like these (https://www.panafricanalliance.com/black-history-books/) the authors we include are almost universally Black. So if you want to learn REAL African history, start with our list.
