Dazia Lee, mother charged with son’s death Charlotte, NC — Union County Sheriff’s detectives have unjustly filed criminal charges against Dazia Ideah Lee, a 20-year old African American mother, for driving around barricades on route NC 218 which resulted in the tragic drowning death of her one year old son.
The unfortunate accident happened last month when Hurricane Florence hit the state of North Carolina.
Dazia, who is from Charlotte, faces a charge of Involuntary Manslaughter and a Misdemeanor charge of Driving on a Closed/Unopened Highway in connection with the death of her son, Kaiden Lee-Welch.
Sheriff’s deputies served Dazia with a Criminal Summons and she is due in court on November 20, 2018.
Sheriff Eddie Cathey stated:
“The tragic death of this child and the circumstances surrounding this case are heartbreaking. We continue to pray for all those suffering as a result of this child’s death. However, after a very thorough investigation and taking all facts into consideration and applying the law, we feel that these charges are appropriate.”
Meanwhile, Dazia has told reporters, “I did everything I could. From the moment I was pregnant until the moment I lost him. I did everything I could to save and protect him.”
She says that on the day of her baby’s death, she did drive around two orange barrels after she saw other drivers doing the same thing. She says that when her car was hit with flood waters, it quickly hydroplaned and began to sink. She was able to free herself and her son from the vehicle, but the rush of water was too strong and she lost her grip of her son.
Sadly, he floated away in the rushing waters, and was found dead the next morning. Watch the local news coverage below:
